Job overview

An exciting opportunity now exists for a Nurse Practitioner position within the Ophthalmology Urgent Care. Applications are invited from registered nurses who are confident in the autonomous management of patients who have sustained a minor injury or illness.

This is a great opportunity for the right applicant to receive training and support in becoming an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner in Ophthalmology at our new build location: New REI building (plymouthhospitals.nhs.uk)

The ideal candidate will have an interest in Ophthalmology and driven to become a qualified nurse practitioner who is passionate about patient care and a willingness to learn to develop skills as a Nurse Practitioner. Ideally you should be competent in autonomous assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment of minor injury.

The successful candidate will be supported and will be allocated a clinical supervisor. There will be opportunity to attend teaching sessions, develop clinical skills and undertake further academic study.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as Priority and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

Having undertaken additional approved training and assessment as part of the role, the post holder will work autonomously as an Nurse Practitioner within agreed Trust guidelines and local policies and protocols for the best outcome of nursing care.

To assist in the development and implementation of Directorate policy and nursing strategy and Nurse Practitioner competencies

To act as an expert resource and facilitator to educate and train other healthcare professionals as required. Will be the Senior nurse for urgent care in the absence of the Senior Sister Urgent Care Lead.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

1. Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and co[1]ordinating the assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence. This includes all aspects of care from admission to discharge.

2. Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing/patient needs, communicating changes with other health care professionals in the multidisciplinary team with ongoing responsibility for patient care as they occur.

3. Promoting and delivering health education within the clinical area and advise patients, family, and others in health promotion issues.

· Undertaking patient triage, undertaking clear assessment of patient health in the acute ophthalmic setting following best practice guidance by telephone and face to face. Making safe and appropriate decisions.

· Demonstrating and undertaking evidence-based practice, playing an active part in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient-centred care.

· Supervising, assessing, and mentoring and supporting junior Registered Nurses and Health care professionals, including bank and agency staff in the clinical setting.

· Increasing the level of knowledge and skills within the Department/Directorate through sharing best practice and supporting others to develop their professional abilities.

· Implementing and sharing good infection prevention and control practice.

· Undertake manual handling assessments and ensuring actions are met.

· Day to day direct supervision of team of patients and staff.

  • Diploma Qualification or equivalent training

  • Relevant Degree or equivalent
  • Relevant mentorship course
  • ILS/PILS/TILS or equivalent
