I have such fond memories of this weekend in Georgia XC racing. There was a time that the Berry Clara Bowl Invitational was THE big meet to attend the Saturday before labor day. Almost all of the top teams ran there and it was kind of the "kick off" to the season, if you will. Most teams had run a meet or two, but usually in a more low key atmosphere. Clara bowl was closer to being considered the actual start of the season. But over time more and more squads opted out for various reasons, and now it seems that there's a large amount of teams who take advantage of the holiday weekend to travel to an out of state meet. More and more teams are giving their kids a fun trip this weekend with a race in a new location. Kudos to those coaches who are making the sport fun for their programs. Others opt out of racing altogether, and prefer to let the kids travel with their families. And you've gotta respect that thought process too.
But there is still a big meet in Georgia this weekend, and that's the which host many of the top teams in the state this year. They always do a great job of getting kids hyped up and have a well run meet on a fast course. It's a great place to go for PR's to start the season. For the kids who have been putting in the work, this weekend is their reward. But one of the best things they always do, is they're able to secure professional runners at their meet as well. And this year they got a good one with Conner Mantz, who won multiple NCAA titles and just finished 8th place in the marathon at the Paris Olympics. He's already one of the best Americans ever, and he's just getting started. Good get, Starrs Mill coaches. Oh, and the meet will be pretty good too.
