Since its conception in 1996 with the original Pokémon games, the Pokémon franchise has been a massive success amongst audiences globally. With the franchise’s many games, movies, television shows, and more, there is no shortage of Pokémon content. With nine generations comprising of over 1,000 Pokémon, most Pokémon fans have a favorite type, generation, and move. However, every Pokémon fan also has a favorite Pokémon they hold dearly. For some, this Pokémon may be their favorite because it was their first, or a memory may be attached to the Pokémon. Though, for many, a favorite Pokémon is what they think is the coolest. 10. Sirfetch’d
Introduced in gen one, Farfetch’d was an interesting, albeit forgettable, Pokémon. But seven generations later, they received an evolution as Sirfetch’d. Sirfetch’d is certainly one of the most creative Pokémon on the list. The Pokédex entry for this gallant creature describes the fighting type as noble, calm, and collected, which certainly fits into their knight persona, along with their leaf shield and leek lance.
9. Kabutops
This extinct Pokémon evolves from Kabuto. Many Pokédex entries for this Pokémon describe him as a predator that uses their claws to slash at their victims and drain them of bodily fluids. It is also said that Kabutops was a great swimmer and could compact their body into his their to swim faster. The description certainly fits the design, as the rock/water type looks like an ancient monster that we would not want to mess with.
8. Typhlosion
Something that the Pokémon games have always done well is their starting type, fire Pokémon; they always seem to be the coolest starters in their gen, which leads to a pattern that will be noticed throughout this list. The final evolution of the Gen 2 starter, Cyndaquil, Typhlosion, is one of the hotter heads here; according to their Pokédex, they have secret move that will cause an explosion if they rub their hands together. Sounds like we do not want to get on their bad side.
7. Excadrill
This Ground/Steel type Pokémon introduced in Gen 5 can use their claws and head as a drill, moving through terrain at 90 miles per hour. Given the moniker “The Drill King,” Excadrill is a living, breathing piece of construction equipment. They cannot only burrow at 90 miles per hour but also through iron and steel plates. It’s best to stay out of this ones way.
6. Pangoro
Some of the most dangerous animals on earth are bears; in some environments, bears are even apex predators. These mammals are incredibly dangerous, and any sane person would not want to come face to face with one. What makes Pangoro so cool is that they’re already such a powerful animal, and on top of that, they happens to know martial arts techniques. Pokédex entries for Pangoro describe them as angry and strong. They also say Pangoro “talks with its fists.” It sounds like a talk that we would not want to have.
5. Garchomp
Garchomp is a great combination of a couple of concepts. Garchomp is a dragon, or at least dragon-like. But what sets Garchomp apart from other dragon types is that Garchomp is sleeker and appears to be nimbler rather than bulky and big. What we love most about Garchomp is their unique head and tail, which takes inspiration from the Hammerhead shark, one of the coolest sea creatures. All of Garchomp’s characteristics lead to an interesting Pokémon design that is not easily forgettable.
4. Infernape
Much like Pangoro and Garchomp, what makes Infernape so cool is that they take so much inspiration from a real-life animal. Monkeys and apes inspire Infernape’s physical design and explains many of his Pokédex entries. Additionally, they have a superb color palate, the gold on their hands, knees, and throughout their body complement their fire crown and silver fur well. It feels like the armor of a warrior, which they are. The fire-fighting type is said to use their extreme agility and flaming body to take out opponents. “Its fire never goes out” is a level of willpower that we aspire to have.
3. Lucario
Possibly the most recognizable fighting-type Pokémon on the list, Lucario has a serious aura about themself that inspires awe in others, which is fitting, considering that it is said that Lucario can sense the auras of others. It is through knowing the auras of their opponents that Lucario can win their battles. Not only is that cool but also scary; Lucario can beat others by understanding them. It is best not to get too personal with this one.
2. Charizard
One of the first dragon-inspired Pokémon, Charizard, set the standard for what a cool Pokémon should be. This fire-flying type of Pokémon is known for its great flames and nobility. Charizard has been with fans since the first generation, and will probably stay with us for a while as they soar high above our hearts.
1. Gyarados
Magikarp is a very laughed at Pokémon. Some may call it worthless, some make fun of it, and others ignore the pathetic fish creature. But those stick with Magikarp will eventually be treated to Gyarados. What makes Gyarados so cool is their story. In a way, they reminds us of Rocky. Magikarp went from being a Pokémon that nobody gave a second thought to to one of the strongest Pokémon possible, from rags to riches. Self-growth is cool. But so is Gyarados’ design. This water-flying type looks like a huge sea dragon that is described as being full of rage, rampage, and destruction. It is okay; we would be that way, too, if everybody counted us out. That is why we think this underdog is the coolest Pokémon.
